The UK authorities has included 11 more nations to its public warning register regarding the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to multiple notable events like the tragic death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for ingestion.

While it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Government minister a senior official stated that every traveler should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."

The entire list of countries listed as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
