NFL Week Five Shocker: Eagles Fall to Broncos and Patriots Stun Bills

Football Game

The final pair of unbeaten teams in the NFL saw their perfect records broken during week five as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills suffered shocking home defeats.

Denver's football team transformed from underdogs to front-page news thanks to an impressive rallying win against the reigning Super Bowl champions the Eagles, before hopping on a flight for Sunday's London contest.

New England's squad then visited Buffalo and halted Buffalo's perfect record with a statement win of their own in their initial national television appearance in a full year.

Baltimore's team suffered a third consecutive loss - their defensive woes could be fatal for their postseason hopes - while Dallas, Indianapolis, and Detroit celebrated blowout wins on another eventful Sunday.

Broncos Defeat Title Holders

It wasn't just beating the reigning title holders, but the manner of their comeback from 14 points down that made the Broncos' 21-17 victory in Philadelphia such a defining success.

The Eagles had secured 10 games in a row, 12 in a row at home and 20 of their last 21 overall before Broncos quarterback Bo Nix engineered two touchdowns in five fourth-quarter minutes and a last-minute field goal.

Philadelphia are now 4-1 but there is significant concern about the offence, which sits among the poorest performing in the league. Receiver DaVonta Smith says they are not "on the same page" with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Broncos' defensive unit, which sacked Hurts six times, had a lot to do with the outcome, and, together with an established starting QB in Nix and top head coach in Sean Payton, they have all the ingredients to mount a legitimate playoff push.

Denver meet New York's Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Patriots on National TV Upset Bills

If Denver's win was somewhat anticipated, few predicted New England traveling to Buffalo and beating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with tremendous resilience.

A first primetime game for Drake Maye delivered a star-making showing as he directed a decisive scoring drive in the final moments to secure victory 23-20.

Maye was tough and made the right throws at crucial moments, many to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who had a big game for their coach's side.

The head coach was anticipated to turn things around in New England, but such a significant victory arrived earlier than many predicted.

New England Defensive Unit

New England's defensive squad contained the Buffalo Bills attack during their surprising road victory.

Ravens Play-off Hopes Over?

This campaign is becoming a nightmare for Baltimore, who were without a host of key defenders as they were hammered 44-10 by Houston's team.

It equaled their biggest loss at home, and falling to 1-4 for this year means among the pre-season Super Bowl favourites have just a small opportunity of making the play-offs.

Baltimore are now 4-11 playing without superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was injured, but it is a historically bad defensive unit that is the primary concern - for a team that have been synonymous with defensive toughness over the years.

Houston coasted to the win as the Ravens became the initial squad in the Super Bowl era to concede a minimum of 37 points in four of their first five contests. Their season is effectively in tatters.

Lions, Bucs and Colts Go 4-1

Detroit's running back duo Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery registered six points in the same game for the 14th time - a joint NFL mark - as the Lions put away Cincinnati 37-24.

The win made it four victories in a row for the highest-scoring team Detroit, but none against opponents with a winning record.

A more surprising 4-1 side are Indianapolis. With Jonathan Taylor running in a hat-trick in their 40-6 hammering of Las Vegas and quarterback Daniel Jones appearing as a new man, they will be a difficult opponent for any team.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the 4-1 club with a thrilling 38-35 victory in Seattle in which both teams exchanged nine touchdowns in 10 impressive possessions before Seattle cracked first with a final-minute turnover.

The kicker kicked the game-winner with the final play of the game for the second time this year. All four of the Bucs' wins have been secured in the final moments.

New Orleans and Tennessee Get Help for First Wins

The way the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee started the season, they needed help to secure their first wins, and they received ample thanks to several comical mistakes from New York and Arizona.

Following a good start from first-year player Jaxson Dart, the Giants committed five turnovers - one was decisively taken back for six points - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on a long reception as the Saints prevailed 26-14.

Arizona were more disastrous as they blew a substantial advantage primarily due to two huge blunders.

First, Emari Demercado inexplicably dropped the football just before reaching the end zone for a long touchdown.

Worse followed when Arizona intercepted Cam Ward close to their own goal line, then lost the football across the goal line for Tyler Lockett to recover as the Titans snapped a 10-game slide with a narrow win.

Seahawks Receiver

Tyler Lockett registered one of the most farcical touchdowns we'll see this year.

This left the Jets as the sole victory-less squad remaining in the league after their punishing 37-22 defeat by Dallas.

The quarterback became the initial athlete in NFL history to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 1K on the ground in his initial twenty career games as he came back from being hurt to steer Washington to an impressive 27-10 victory at Los Angeles.

The running back was the standout performer for Carolina with over 200 yards on the ground in their thrilling 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
