Previous FBI head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's legal representative filed the plea on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
His attorney declared he would try to have the proceedings thrown out for multiple reasons including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was formally accused shortly after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they planned to present multiple petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully designated to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's case was originally handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Trump after his probe into another political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.
James Comey seemed in good spirits as he came into the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.
Following the reading to the magistrate state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.
Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about four months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
While in office, James Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.
The federal government claim Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he provided false information to the upper house by stating he had not permitted someone at the agency to disclose to media organizations details about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Via social media Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".
"Our household have understood for considerable time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
The charges against Mr Comey emerged after Trump published on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
